Kindred Reviews 2026: An Honest Look for Airbnb Hosts
Kindred reviews for Airbnb hosts: what Kindred costs, how its credits work, what members say, and how it compares with Hostshare and HomeExchange.

Kindred is a members-only home swap with no membership fee: you host members in the home you live in while you travel, earn one credit per night, and pay a cleaning fee and a service fee on each trip. Reviewers like the community, the concierge and the included cleanings, and the common complaints are fees and hard-to-book stays. The honest bottom line for Airbnb hosts: Kindred is built for the home you live in, not a dedicated rental, so if you host a short-term rental, Hostshare fits better.
What is Kindred and how does it work?
Kindred Concepts, Inc. runs Kindred as a members-only community. You apply with your home, and Kindred accepts homes where it sees demand. It says it takes homes in about 200 cities across North America and Europe.
The model is "give a night, get a night":
- Earn 1 credit for each night a member stays in your home.
- Spend 1 credit per night at another member's home.
- Every home earns at the same rate, whatever its size or value.
- New members get 5 starting credits.
- Credits can't be bought. A 1:1 swap on the same dates uses none.
Guests request to book, and hosts have 48 hours to respond. Kindred arranges a cleaning before and after each stay, and the guest pays for both (how Kindred works).
How much does Kindred cost?
Kindred has no membership fee. Kindred fees come per trip, in two parts:
- Cleaning fee. Two cleanings, before and after your stay. It varies by destination, trip length, bedrooms, home size and sometimes season.
- Service fee. Kindred doesn't publish a standard rate. It says the fee varies and shows the exact amount before you book. One help page calls it a "nightly service fee".
There are two exceptions, per Kindred's pricing and credit policy. Founding members in the US, Canada and Mexico pay a flat $50 service fee per trip. Members can also buy Kindred Passport for $600 a year (or four quarterly payments of $165) and pay $0 in service fees on trips booked that year.
For a sense of totals, Kindred's homepage shows member trips like 7 nights in New York City for $580 and 5 nights in Honolulu for $450.
Is Kindred legit? What Kindred home swap reviews say
Yes. Every member verifies a government ID with a selfie match through Stripe Identity, and every home is verified, including proof that you own it or have permission to share it (Kindred).
Kindred reviews skew positive. Its iPhone app has a 4.9 rating from 1,736 ratings on the US App Store (checked October 13, 2026).
What reviewers like:
- The community and the hosts they stay with.
- Concierge help with hosting and trips.
- Coming home to a cleaned home.
What recent App Store reviewers complain about:
- Fees. Some say the service fee plus cleaning made a trip cost close to a hotel.
- Booking. Some say hosts in busy cities like New York don't answer or say no. Kindred lets you request up to two homes for the same trip.
- Damage claims. Some hosts say claims were a hassle. Kindred's policy asks for photos, proof of ownership and repair estimates.
Can Airbnb hosts use Kindred?
Only with the home you live in. Kindred says it is "for real homes, not short-term rentals." It welcomes owners and renters "as long as their home is used as a primary residence" (Kindred).
You can add another home only if it is "a personal place of residence, and not a full-time investment property." Two more limits matter for hosts:
- You earn only when you leave. Kindred handles whole-home stays only, so you must be out of the house to host.
- Hosts don't get paid. No money passes between guest and host on Kindred.
So a dedicated Airbnb or Vrbo rental doesn't fit Kindred. Our guide to the Airbnb host swap covers what does.
Who is Kindred for?
Kindred is built for people who swap the home they live in, not for hosts. It suits members who:
- Live in the home they share. Kindred takes primary residences only, and you move out for each stay you host.
- Want to approve every guest. Every stay starts as a request you accept or decline.
- Want turnover handled. Kindred schedules cleaners before and after each stay, and the guest pays for both.
- Value community. Members host local meetups, and Kindred Circles group members by family, employer or city.
For a short-term rental host, most of that doesn't apply. Your place is already furnished, cleaned and booked like a business, and that's the kind of home Kindred says it doesn't take.
Why does Hostshare fit hosts better?
Hostshare is a host-only travel network. Every home on it belongs to another active host. Like Kindred, it's free to join and has no nightly rate, but it's built for rentals (how Hostshare works).
- Made for your rental. Each listing needs proof of the right to host, and an admin reviews it before it can be booked.
- Share only nights you wouldn't book. Share as few as 3 nights a year to stay active. Block out up to 200 nights a year for peak weekends, holidays and events.
- Your listing stays live. Keep it on Airbnb, Vrbo and anywhere else. Calendars sync by iCal from any provider, and Hospitable connects directly.
- You earn while you stay home. If your rental is a separate place, members stay there, not in your house.
- Earnings reflect your listing. On Kindred, every night earns one credit. On Hostshare, what a shared night earns depends on your listing's value and local demand.
- Instant booking. No requests and no 48-hour wait. Book up to 6 months ahead.
- Your cleaning fee is yours. The traveling member pays it, and it's passed to you in full.
When you travel, you pay the host's cleaning fee plus a small service fee based on the value of the nights you book. Truvi damage protection is built into that fee, with no security deposit. See pricing for plans.
